1.   What is Esso™ Renewable Diesel R20?

Esso Renewable Diesel R20 is a high-quality diesel fuel made with a minimum of 20% renewable content - hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO). It is formulated with care to ensure that it delivers the same great protection and cleaning power for your engine as Esso Synergy™ Diesel.

 

The HVO we use is made from waste oils, such as used cooking oil which is refined into a high-quality fuel component and blended with conventional diesel and our proprietary Esso Synergy™ additive. It is intended for use in the same applications as conventional diesel.

 

Esso Renewable Diesel R20 is a drop-in replacement for conventional diesel that meets the Hong Kong statutory specifications of motor vehicle diesel(1) and is suitable for all diesel engines.

 

2.  What are the GHG emissions benefits of Esso Renewable Diesel R20?

The premium renewable ingredient in Esso Renewable Diesel R20 helps deliver an estimated 15.4%* lower life cycle greenhouse gas emissions compared to conventional diesel.

 

Life cycle greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions estimates for fuels can consider the emissions associated with extracting or sourcing the raw materials used to make a product, and then, producing and using that product over its entire life cycle. It is also often referred to as the carbon Intensity (CI) of the fuel. This approach provides a useful way of comparing the GHG emission benefits of different products, and helps customers better understand the choices they are making.

 

3.  How do you calculate that Esso Renewable Diesel R20 has 15.4%* lower life cycle greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions?

The greenhouse gas emission reduction takes into account the production and use of the fuel. The reduction of life cycle greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, for Esso Renewable Diesel R20 with 20% hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) produced from used cooking oil, is estimated at 15.4%* compared to conventional diesel.

 
4.  Why is Esso piloting an alternative diesel?

Esso plans to play a leading role in the energy transition by providing products to help customers reduce their greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Based on consumer feedback, there is considerable customer demand for lower GHG emission fuels, and so we are choosing to trial an alternative premium diesel containing Esso Synergy™ additive, providing our customers with a lower life cycle greenhouse gas emission fuel compared to conventional diesel, with the same great protection. By trialing Esso Renewable Diesel R20 we are offering customers an additional choice for their fueling options, which requires no change to their vehicle – it’s an immediate ‘drop-in’ solution.

 

5.  Where will we be able to find this new product?

Esso Renewable Diesel R20 is currently available at Esso Tsing Yi South service station. Synergy Diesel will still be concurrently available at all stations.

 

Esso Renewable Diesel R20 is expected to be made available at more stations in the near future.

 

6.  What is a renewable fuel?

Renewable fuels are those fuels that are produced from a renewable energy source. Examples are fuels made from biomass such as wood or crop waste, from oil extracted from plants, or from previously used materials (such as used cooking oil, or animal fats). In the case of renewable diesel, those renewable energy sources are refined to become a high-quality fuel component.

 

Esso Renewable Diesel R20 is made from waste oils such as used cooking oil. The blend component for the renewable fuels is not made from fatty acid methyl ester (FAME).

 

7.  What is a drop-in fuel? Can I switch between this and regular diesel without impacting my vehicle warranty?

Esso Renewable Diesel R20 meets the Hong Kong statutory specifications of motor vehicle diesel,(1) the same as conventional diesel. It is called a ‘drop-in’ fuel as it is suitable for all diesel engines and can be used interchangeably with conventional diesel. No engine modification is required.

 

8.  Will Esso Renewable Diesel R20 clean my engine?

Esso Renewable Diesel R20 contains our proprietary Esso Synergy™ additive, designed to help clean vital parts of your engine, including your car’s fuel injectors. A cleaner engine generally means better performance.

 

9.  This is great, but what else can I do?

Filling up your vehicle with Esso Renewable Diesel R20 has the potential to lower your life cycle GHG emissions. Don’t forget the simple steps you can take to help improve the fuel efficiency of your vehicle and help lower your fuel bills too!

 

Follow these four steps to drive more efficiently:

  • ensure your tires are correctly inflated,
  • accelerate and brake smoothly,
  • drive with the windows up, and
  • remove excess weight from your vehicle
